Allison Lamnea – The Restlessly Ambitious, Award-Winning Practice Manager
At mydentist, our patients come first, it’s as simple as that. We are passionate about delivering high-quality patient care whilst ensuring our patients’ experience with us is world class. In order for this to happen, we have dedicated teams that work tirelessly in our practices to keep our standards high and most importantly, their patient’s oral health in check.
The role of the Practice Manager is very significant, we currently have 650 working across our practices in the UK who are leading and motivating their practice teams and clinicians to ensure that patients’ needs are met. They are highly skilled to build and nurture great working relationships, offering full support to their team at all times and ensuring mydentist is a place to grow.
Allison Lamnea, Practice Manager at mydentist Sketty Road in Swansea, was awarded ‘Practice Manager of the Year’ at our Clinical Conference in 2017. She tells us about what it meant to her to win such a significant accolade and how the practice and wider teams work altogether better.
A Surprising Achievement
“I thoroughly enjoyed attending the mydentist Clinical Conference in 2017 and the Gala Dinner was a fantastic evening. It gave me the opportunity to make connections with people from different areas of the business whilst being able to put faces to names and meet the people who I only knew through speaking with on the phone. When I received the ‘Practice Manager of the Year’ Award, I was really honoured and overwhelmed, it completely took me by surprise to think that in a business as big as mydentist, with so many other fantastic managers, I have been given this honour. I still ask myself to this day, what did people see in me to bestow me with such an award?!”
We work as one team – both Clinical and Operational
“I have been a Manager in Orthodontics for 37 years, 5 of those have been working for mydentist when the practice I worked in at the time was acquired. I have attended numerous mydentist academy courses which has really helped and supported my personal development. I have worked with such a fantastic team of people who are just as enthusiastic about their role as I am, it really does make a difference. I still, after all these years, get a buzz in working hard to make the practice the best it can and that our patient’s needs are always met”
“I have consistently received fantastic support along the way, working collaboratively with all of the departments at Head Office, the Area Development Managers who work tirelessly to support us, the Director of Regions and the other Practice Managers and their teams in my area who are always available to lend a hand when I need their support. You are never on your own!”
We’re at our best when our team feels like a family
“In April 2018, I changed from a busy 5 surgery orthodontic practice with 20 employees to a much quieter 3 surgery practice with 8 employees. The team I work with now consists of a Specialist Orthodontist, 2 Orthodontic Therapists and a team of Nurses and Receptionists who are just a dream to work with. Cliché I know, but it’s just like a little extended family for me, they have welcomed me into their team with open arms, I find that this is how they make the patients feel…very warm and welcoming. My team all work collaboratively to motivate, inspire and push each other to be even better each day, I am very proud of them as they know it is not just down to the manager to make sure that our patients are given the highest standard of care”
Looking to the future
“I’m currently really happy in my new practice and, with it being smaller, it has fit in perfectly with my part-time hours. I would really like to be part of the Orthodontic Practice Manager Buddy team when it’s up and running and although early retirement would be perfect, my main focus now is to make my practice one of the best in the Region, if not, one of the best at mydentist whilst making my team happy and rewarding them accordingly.”
“My advice for anyone looking to start a career in Practice Management is if you’re given the opportunity… take the challenge and for it to work give it everything and make your practice your own family”
