Julie Simpkins – Hygienist of the Year Nominee
mydentist are proud to have a number of nominees at the 2018 Dental Awards. We spoke to ‘Hygienist of the Year’ Nominee, Julie Simpkins, about her unusual journey in becoming a hygienist and how surprisingly brilliant her experience with mydentist has been.
“When I left school I successfully qualified as a veterinary nurse and started working alongside a visiting Dentist who attended the vets to help restore police dogs, hearing dogs and sight dog’s dentitions, which sometimes included root canal and crowns. I used to administer the general anaesthetics and was eventually asked if I would like to train as a Dental Nurse. I didn’t know what a Dental Nurse did, it was a leap of faith, and one that I’m really glad I took.
I completed my Dental Nurse training and went on to join the Royal Navy to study Dental Hygiene and qualified in 2001. I left the Royal Navy on maternity leave, with my son William, after completing 6 years’ service and after the birth of my daughter, Charlotte, I was ready to embark on more training! I went on to do my Dental Therapy training at Bristol Dental Hospital, and qualified in 2011”.
More than just a number
“Before joining mydentist, my perception of corporate dental practices was not good, I didn’t want to be a number, I wanted to be a Hygienist with lots of clinical freedom not someone lost in the system. Now that I work for mydentist, I quickly realised I still have my clinical freedom, I feel like a valued member of the team, with a good support network and there are lots of training and CPD opportunities. It’s one of the best decisions I have made.
My current practice in Gloucester is a large 10 surgery clinic with 2 decontamination rooms, and all of the Clinicians have been there a long time. It has an army of receptionists all of which are lovely, approachable and accommodating. The Practice Manager is fantastic and runs it so well, I never want for any equipment or materials and any sundries that I want to sell are often sourced for me.
A few times a month I also support at the mydentist practice in Stroud which is a much smaller 4 surgery clinic, it is a lovely place to work with very friendly staff, I really enjoy paying them a visit and it gives me a change of scenery from time to time.
Everyone at both practices are excited and pleased that I am nominated for this award, and what’s more, made it through to the finals! I was surprised when the Practice Manager in Gloucester told me she nominated me and I would really like to thank everyone for the support”
Quality care comes first
“What I love most about being a Hygienist is meeting and talking to people. I love being able to help and transform someone’s smile, treating nervous patients, and ones that have had a bad previous experience, and being able to restore some faith with regards dental treatment.
I also love treating children. Recently, I attended a local primary school and did Dental Health Education talks to 140 children aged 7-10yrs, I have also given presentations to the local Rotary and Soroptimists clubs about my voluntary dental trip to Nepal.
I just love my job full stop! It really is so varied and interesting and I enjoy it more every day, I never wake up and think oh no I have to go to work this week”.
