Michael Hicks – Young Dentist of the Year Nominee
mydentist are proud to have a number of nominees at the 2018 Dental Awards.
We spoke to ‘Young Dentist of the Year’ Nominee, Michael Hicks, about why he chose a career in Dentistry and how mydentist has helped him to achieve his goals.
Tell us about when you first decided to be a Dentist and your career path so far
“I first thought about dentistry as a career after some work experience during 6th form, but from a young age I have been creative, and dentistry seemed like a good career option to combine my creativity, aptitude in science, and love of interaction with people.
I grew up in Cheadle, went to school in Stockport, attended 6th Form in Wilmslow, and completed my undergraduate degree at the University of Manchester and was awarded the degree of Bachelor of Dental Surgery with Honours in 2012. Following this, I completed my Foundation Dentistry training in Bolton, and won the North West FD Case Presentation Trophy. After my foundation year, I embarked on two years of training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Wythenshawe Hospital and the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle. It was during these years that I obtained my MFDS at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
In 2015 I decided to return to dental practice and joined mydentist. I chose to work alongside mydentist having spoken to dental friends who also work with the company and recommended joining. I found the recruitment process very pleasant and I have enjoyed working with the group ever since. I like the networking that comes with working in this environment, and I think particularly in South Shields, we have a proactive team of Dentists that meet regularly in the area for peer review nights. I also think that the mydentist Academy is excellent and the courses are good value for money”
How has mydentist supported your career development?
“mydentist has been extremely supportive of my career goals, and allowed me to practice dentistry the way I want. Since I have worked as an Associate, I have expanded my competence in aesthetic dentistry, endodontics, and orthodontics. My Area Manager, Kelly, has worked closely with me over the last few years and we have just been awarded a Tier 2 MOS contract for the practice. This was one of my personal career ambitions and it will be of great benefit for the South Tyneside community.
I have been with mydentist for nearly 3 years now and at my current practice, mydentist Dean Road for 18 months. Dean Road is a large 14 surgery practice in South Shields. It’s a great environment to work in and we have dentists practicing in sedation, orthodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, dental implants, and facial aesthetics, as well as our excellent hygienists and therapists. All the staff are very friendly and we have a good laugh at lunch (and at the works Christmas do!).
There are two people who keep me on the straight and narrow; my Practice Manager, Kirsty and my Nurse, Raymond. I have worked with Raymond since I joined the company 3 years ago, and he has just been promoted to ‘Treatment Co-ordinator’ within the practice”
What does it mean to you to be nominated for this award?
“I honestly didn’t expect to be nominated for a national award at all, and I was very excited when the letter arrived to say that I was shortlisted as a finalist! I have been fortunate to have many highlights since qualifying nearly 6 years ago, but there isn’t much that comes close to being a finalist at the UK Dental Awards. This is definitely the peak of my career so far and hopefully a platform for future success. Just to be nominated was an incredibly humble feeling, and to be recognised for the things you do day-to-day is wonderful. Being shortlisted as a finalist is phenomenal, and considering the calibre of candidates in the past, is a fantastic achievement. I can’t wait for the awards ceremony in May…let’s hope I can squeeze into my Tuxedo! Everyone at the mydentist Dean Road practice has been congratulatory and supportive…especially our lovely receptionists! Whilst being a finalist for Young Dentist of the Year is a very personal achievement, it is also a great reflection on the whole team who all work extremely hard, and I couldn’t do my job well without them”
What’s next for you?
“I am currently studying for my Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Implant Dentistry at Newcastle University on a part-time basis, and working towards my Membership of the Faculty of Dental Trainers at RCS Edinburgh. I have always had a fascination with implant dentistry, and I can’t wait to qualify and start the next step in my career. I have been appointed as an Associate Clinical Lecturer in Oral Surgery, at Newcastle University Dental School so my current working week is busy, filled with NHS and private dentistry, minor oral surgery, and undergraduate teaching.I have a very busy few months ahead, especially starting the MOS contract, mentoring, and my postgraduate examinations. I am also getting married this August!”
